You need to sit a French exam for your prefecture file but do not know which one to choose? TCF IRN, TEF IRN, DELF, DCL FLE — these four certifications are all recognised for residence permit and naturalisation applications. They are not the same exam. This guide helps you choose the right one for your situation.
Which Exams Are Recognised by the Prefecture in 2026?
Since January 2026, only official certifications are accepted. OFII certificates are no longer sufficient. Here is what the prefecture may require depending on the permit you are applying for:
Recognised certifications and required levels since 1 January 2026:
- Multi-year residence card → minimum A2 level — TCF IRN, TEF IRN or DELF A2
- Resident card (10 years) → minimum B1 level — TCF IRN, TEF IRN, DELF B1 or DCL FLE
- French naturalisation → minimum B2 level — TCF IRN, TEF IRN, DELF B2 or DCL FLE

TCF IRN — If You Need to Sit an Exam Soon
The TCF IRN is run by France Éducation International. Sessions take place several times a month. It is available on computer or paper, depending on the centre. It is the most common exam for prefecture applications.
TEF IRN — If Cost Is an Important Factor
The TEF IRN is run by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Its fee is often lower than the TCF. Results arrive within 1 to 2 weeks. The exam is taken on computer only. Find a nearby centre at cci-paris-idf.fr.
DELF — If You Want a Lifetime Diploma
The DELF is an official diploma from the French Ministry of Education. It never expires — that is its key advantage. If your prefecture application is not urgent, it is often the best choice. Results take longer (4 to 8 weeks). Our DELF training programme covers both written and oral preparation.
DCL FLE — If You Are in Professional Integration
The DCL FLE (Diplôme de Compétence en Langue) is a professional-context exam, recognised by prefectures. It is valid for life and corresponds to B1 or B2 level depending on results. It is particularly suited to working adults or job seekers. Find out more at dcl.education.gouv.fr.
Key takeaway: If you need to sit an exam in the coming weeks for an immediate application, the TCF IRN or TEF IRN are the most responsive options. If you are preparing for naturalisation over a longer period, the DELF or DCL FLE offer permanent validity.

No. Since January 2026, OFII certificates are no longer accepted as proof of French level. You must present a recognised certification: DELF, TCF IRN or TEF IRN. Check service-public.fr to confirm requirements for your specific situation.
The TCF IRN is the version specifically designed for immigration, residence and naturalisation applications. It includes 4 compulsory sections: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written expression and oral expression. The standard TCF (TCF Tout Public) is for university admission and is not accepted by prefectures for residence permits.
Yes. Unlike the TCF IRN and TEF IRN, which are valid for 2 years, the DELF diploma never expires. This is a significant advantage if your prefecture application is not imminent. Do verify that the level you obtained matches the permit you are applying for. If in doubt, contact your prefecture or check service-public.fr.
