How to prepare for the TCF A2/B1 for a residence permit

The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) is one of the most requested French language exams in France, particularly for administrative procedures related to residence permits, resident cards, or French citizenship. If you live in Île-de-France and your prefecture has asked you to prove an A2 or B1 level, this guide is for you.

Why do prefectures require the TCF?

Since 2016, French language proficiency has been a mandatory condition for obtaining or renewing certain residence permits. The Ministry of the Interior specifies the expected levels based on the type of document:

• Multi-year residence card: minimum A2 level
• Resident card (10 years): minimum B1 level
• French naturalization: minimum B1 level

The TCF is recognized by all French prefectures. It is organized by the CIEP (Centre international d'études pédagogiques) and takes place at approved centers throughout France.

The 4 TCF tests

The TCF consists of 4 mandatory tests:

1. Listening comprehension (25 questions — 25 min)

You listen to recordings (dialogues, announcements, broadcasts) and answer multiple choice questions. The goal is to assess whether you understand spoken French in everyday situations.

2. Language structures (20 questions — 20 min)

This test evaluates your grammar and vocabulary through MCQs. No writing required: you choose the correct answer from 3 or 4 options.

3. Reading comprehension (25 questions — 30 min)

You read texts (articles, emails, posters) and answer comprehension questions. The texts vary in length and complexity.

4. Written expression (3 exercises — 60 min)

For the TCF TP (Tous Publics), a written expression test is added. You will need to write a message or short text in response to a situation. This section is evaluated by a human examiner.

Strategies to reach A2 level

A2 level corresponds to approximately 200 hours of French learning. Here's how to reach it effectively:

• Practice MCQs: most of the TCF is multiple choice, so strategy matters more than linguistic perfection. Learn to eliminate wrong answers.
• Listen to French every day: simple podcasts, radio news (RFI Africa offers simplified French content).
• Practice reading comprehension: read short texts and practice identifying main ideas.
• Review everyday vocabulary: family, housing, work, health — A2 themes are very predictable.

Strategies to reach B1 level

B1 is more demanding — it requires approximately 350–400 hours of training. To get there:

• Master verb tenses: imperfect, past perfect, simple future, conditional — these appear consistently in the structures test.
• Expand your thematic vocabulary: environment, current events, work, education — common B1 topics.
• Practise written expression: write short letters or emails and practise making simple arguments.
• Take practice tests: TCF past papers are available on the CIEP website. Simulate exam conditions.
